Turbo-Timo-Werner compared to Lengend Didier Drogba

 Chelsea legend Didier Drogba wasn’t a big hit in his first season in Chelsea.

Drogba scored 10 Premier League goals in his debut campaign and 16 goals in all competitions, having played 41 times.

Drogba will eventually end up with a legendary status at the end of his Chelsea career.

Jamie Redknapp has now likened Timo Werner’s case to that of Drogba. The 24-year-old has missed so many good chances since joining the Blues, and his recent miss against Fulham has brought a lot of criticism.

Despite his missed chances, Werner has the attributes of being a top striker, and Redknapp believes he’d eventually come good.

“After 17 games at Leipzig last season, he got 18 goals. His confidence was running through his veins,” said Redknapp on Sky Sports.

I remember seeing him get in that sort of position and him scoring all the time. You can never underestimate what confidence is like. Frank said something really interesting, the only thing you can do when you’re having a bad spell is to work harder.

“Get a bag of balls in training and practice. He’s got a manager there that did it, he had the best attitude. If he works hard, he’ll get lucky and it can change him. Didier Drogba didn’t hit the ground running at Chelsea.”

Wayne rooney officially retires from football

 The Championship club announced the 35-year-old former England striker had signed a contract until the summer of 2023 and has also announced his retirement as a player. The club's chief executive Stephen Pearce said in a statement: “We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Wayne Rooney as our new manager.

 Chelsea will be looking to put their disappointing Premier League form behind them when they make the trip to London rivals Fulham on Saturday.

Centre-back Andreas Christensen sustained a knee injury in the build-up to one of Aston Villa's goals on December 28 and has not featured since. However, he is now back in training and Lampard expects to have the Dane back next weekend.

N'Golo Kante

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 16 (vs. Fulham)

N'Golo Kante was not involved against Morecambe because of a hamstring complaint originating from the recent loss to Manchester City. The Frenchman will be assessed ahead of the trip to Fulham.

Just in: Eaglets has qualify for the WAFU U-17 Cup semi-final in Togo

 

Nigeria U-17 have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2021 Wafu U17 Championship taking place in Togo.

The Golden Eaglets had bowed 1-0 to Cote d’Ivoire in their opening Group B match courtesy of Charles Mezia’s 77th-minute strike. In their next fixture against Ghana, they took the lead through Joseph Arumala before their arch-rivals equalised to ensure the game ended 1-1 – a result that put them on the brink of elimination.

Even at that, Fatai Amoo’s boys scaled through as the Black Starlets crumbled 3-1 to Les Petits Elephants at the Stade Municipal, Lome.

With this result, the five-time world champions are through to the last four of the competition alongside the 2013 African U17 champions.

To reach the final, Nigeria must negotiate their way past Group A winners Burkina Faso on Friday while Cote d’Ivoire must get past Niger Republic on the same day at the Stade Kegue.

Hosts Togo were disqualified from the championship on Sunday after two of their players failed the Magnetic Resonance Imaging tests (MRI).

“This decision is made in accordance with article 27.4 of the regulations of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations which stipulates that “if after having carried out the age eligibility test (MRI) for a participating team and a player ‘is revealed ineligible, the participating team will be disqualified,” a statement from the organisers read.

The regional tournament serves as qualifiers for the 2021 Africa U17 Cup of Nations billed for Morocco. There, Africa’s four representatives for the Fifa U17 World Cup in Peru would be determined.

The Golden Eaglets finished fourth at the 2019 U17 Afcon hosted by Tanzania.

At the global fiesta held in Brazil, the team led by Manu Garba crashed out after the Round of 16 following their 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands with Misjonne Hansen finding the net on three occasions inside Estadio Olimpico, Goiania.

Manchester United gives injury boost on four players ahead of Burnley Game

Manchester United could welcome back four players from injury for their pivotal game in hand at Burnley on Tuesday.

Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof missed the FA Cup win over Watford on Saturday night and Eric Bailly was forced off before half-time following a collision with Dean Henderson.

However, the quartet all trained on Monday morning and, with Edinson Cavani back from suspension, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to have a fully fit squad to choose from.

"All of them trained today," Solskjaer confirmed. "Paul and Eric didn't do all of it, but Luke and Victor did all of it. I've got a decent amount of players to pick from. Let's see with Paul and Eric how they are tomorrow."

United have won their last four games at Turf Moor but Burnley are unbeaten in their last four at Old Trafford, where they have gone 2-0 up on their last three visits.

Chelsea are the only team to have scored more than once at Burnley in the league this season but United will have all of their attacking players to choose from as they aim to leapfrog Liverpool and go top of the table in January for the first time since 2013.

Crystal palace star man Eberechi Eze is being investigated by FA over apparent Covid-19 breach (photos)

 

Crystal Palace winger, Eberechi Eze's visit to his former club QPR over the weekend for their FA Cup third-round tie against Fulham is being investigated by the Football Association.

 

The England-born Nigerian footballer sat in the directors' box at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium as Rangers were beaten 2-0 in extra-time by Fulham.

 

Eze was pictured not wearing a facemask or social distancing from others as he watched his old team slip to a defeat.

It is understood that Eze who was an invited guest of QPR for the tie, complied with Covid protocols and returned a negative Covid test prior to attending.

 

But the FA has told Sky Sports News it will be looking into Eze's attendance and the governing body has stated that, contrary to some reports, it did not grant the 22-year-old approval to go to the game

 

That is set to result in punishment for all three parties - QPR, Eze, and Palace.

QPR boss Mark Warburton said: "I've no idea whether he broke protocols or not. You'd have to ask our health and safety officer because that's above my pay-grade.

 

"I want to talk about the game. What other players do in their own time, I can't comment on that. It's not my area of expertise. Far from it."

 

Eberechi Eze, who was born in Greenwich, England to Nigerian parents is eligible to play for both Nigeria and England.

Juventus Star defender Matthijs de Ligt has tested positive for COVID-19

 

Juventus defender, Matthijs de Ligt has tested positive for coronavirus, the Italian club have confirmed.

The Dutch international played the full 90 minutes of Juventus’ 3-1 win at leaders AC Milan on Wednesday January 6, but has now been placed into isolation. 

“Juventus Football Club announces that, during the checks provided for by the protocol in force, Matthijs De Ligt has emerged positive with Covid-19,” read a statement on the club’s website.

“The player has already been placed in solitary confinement.”

He becomes the third player from the Serie A champions to test positive for Coronavirus after Brazilian defender Alex Sandro and Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado who both returned a positive result on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

Gabriel Magalhaes had plenty of reasons to be cheerful in Arsenal training on Friday.

Firstly, the summer signing from Lille was back amongst the group for the first time in a couple of weeks after missing the last three games because of Covid-19 related issues.

And now he could be in contention to reclaim his place at centre-back for Saturday evening's FA Cup tie at home to Newcastle United.

But even a recall to the starting XI may not be the highlight of Gabriel's weekend.

Ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Calum Chambers, and Willian were put through their paces at the club's London Colney training base.

And there was a moment between Gabriel and Thomas Partey that won't soon be forgotten.

As spotted in a behind the scenes of Arsenal's training session video uploaded to YouTube, at around the 3.00-minute mark, a rondo task is taking place.

The ball eventually comes to Gabriel and on the half-volley, he manages to guide the ball through the legs of Partey to a massive ovation from some of the Gunners squad.

Shkodran Mustafi turns away in disbelief, Nicolas Pepe screams in joy, while Lacazette and Aubameyang laugh and appear to sing the 'Partey song'.

Whilst this is happening, the Ghana international is trying to play down the fact that he was nutmegged.

Although, Gabriel was not having any of it as he raced off as if he'd scored a goal before dancing right in front of Partey.

In better news for Partey, he's in line to make his first appearance for Arsenal since limping out of the North London Derby defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last month.

"Well, we’ve got an extra two training sessions. We will assess after that whether he’s completely fully ready to start or participate against Newcastle or if we’re gonna leave it another few days for the Palace game," manager Mikel Arteta said in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

What would make the perfect January transfer window for the Gunners boss

The January transfer window is not even a week old but Arsenal have already been very busy.

Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba have already left the club with many more expected to follow later this month. 

Mikel Arteta has already admitted that getting players out of the club is the priority but there is definitely some need for incomings. Omar Rekik has already been announced but it is unlikely that he will be the only acquisition this window. 

With all this in mind here football.london takes a look at what Mikel Arteta's dream transfer scenario would be at Arsenal.

Fans are always excited by the prospect of bringing new players into their club, but right now Arsenal's focus is on getting players out.

Speaking ahead of the January transfer window Arteta revealed he's expecting several players to leave the Emirates on loan this month.

Well, we have a large squad. We knew that," he said. "A lot of things that should have happened in the summer we could not accomplish them for different reasons.

There are a lot of players that are going to go on loan. They are going to leave. And that’s the priority at the moment because we cannot sustain the numbers that we have in certain positions."

It seems that high on the list of potential outgoing is Mesut Ozil. The German, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been left out of the Gunners' Premier League and Europa League squads, and seems to have no future at Arsenal. 

DC United and Fenerbahce have both been linked although it is looking more likely that the Turkish side will seal a deal to take him on loan this month. It is not exactly certain what the nature of this deal isy, but it is expected the 32-year-old will join Fener on a permanent basis after that.

This will likely be a relief for Mikel Arteta who has had to field questions on Ozil ever since he was initially axed from the squad in June.

"What I can tell you is that I tried my best. I tried to give him as many opportunities as I could," said the Spaniard of his number 10. "From my honest side I've been patient and I've been fair,

The other player to have missed out on the squad list back in October was Sokratis. Arteta would ideally like to get him out of the club too.

As well as permanent departures for senior players there are a few loan deals for some of the Hale End prospects that Mikel Arteta may be considering. football.london understands that the Spaniard is open to allowing Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock to leave in order to get more game time.

When asked about them in his press conference the Gunners boss revealed that decisions had been made on their future.

"When we have to decide is this player going to have enough game time if we keep him here? Is it better to send him on loan? Then it’s a different discussion," he said.
